Christian Persecution
Since late August 2008, Christians have been under attack in the Indian state of Orissa, as well as in many other places around the country. On August 23, 2008, VHP leader Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati was killed with three of his followers. Even though all evidence pointed to the work of Maoist Rebels, the VHP was quick to place the blame on the much disdained Christian community.
Over the following weeks, thousands of homes and churches have been burned, people have been murdered and many Christians have fled into the woods for safety. Though the media has largely ignored the extent of the violence, it is clear that this crisis is far from over.
